Overview Effective May 3, 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began enforcing new Section 232 tariffs on certain auto parts. Introduced under Presidential Proclamation 10895, the change imposes a 25% duty on a range of components used in passenger vehicles and light trucks. Importers should review product classifications, tariff codes, and documentation procedures to ensure continued compliance.

Key Points for Importers
Tariff Enforcement:Â A 25% duty now applies to specific imported auto parts, effective May 3, 2025.
Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) Codes:
Use HTS 9903.94.05Â for most affected items.
Use HTS 9903.94.06Â for exceptions, including many goods that qualify under the USMCA from Canada or Mexico.
Duty Stacking:Â These Section 232 duties may be applied alongside others, such as Section 301 tariffs, anti-fentanyl measures, and duties on steel or aluminum. Proper sequencing and documentation are critical.
CBP Guidance: CBP’s Cargo Systems Messaging Service (CSMS) confirms the implementation date and provides details on eligibility and documentation. Importers are encouraged to consult these resources for up-to-date instructions.
What to Do Now Review your current entries to determine whether your products are impacted. If you rely on USMCA benefits or source from multiple countries, now is a good time to reassess your classifications and compliance strategy.
